On February 1, 2023, Robert Cunningham, a 64-year-old employee of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), was fatally shot while attempting to protect a woman during a shooting rampage at the Potomac Avenue Metro Station in Southeast Washington, D.C.
