On September 26, 2024, the decomposed body of 40-year-old Birmingham resident Dempsey Chevoit Smith was discovered in a wooded area near the 3000 block of Jefferson State Parkway, situated between Center Point High School and Jefferson State Community College. A community member walking in the vicinity around 8:15 a.m. made the grim discovery and promptly notified law enforcement authorities.
