On May 14, 2024, at approximately 2:50 p.m., 62-year-old Michael Phillip Coleman was fatally shot while seated in his wheelchair near the 100 block of 59th Street North in Birmingham, Alabama. East Precinct officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, they found Coleman unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced deceased at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services.
