On a chaotic Monday night, May 29, 2023, in Birmingham, Alabama, 43-year-old Juanderius Woods was killed in a hail of gunfire. The incident unfolded in the Kingston neighborhood, specifically in a parking lot of the Dr. Morrell Todd Holmes housing community. The shootout was exceptionally violent, with reports indicating that as many as 90 to 100 rounds were fired within the span of a single minute.
Surveillance footage captured the harrowing event, showing numerous bystanders in the vicinity as the shooting took place.
Woods was the sole fatality in the intense exchange of gunfire. The brazenness of the attack, occurring in a residential area with many people nearby, underscored the reckless nature of the violence. Following the shooting, Birmingham police began an investigation into the Memorial Day homicide. Despite the presence of witnesses, investigators initially faced challenges in gathering information.
A few days later, on Friday, June 2nd, an arrest was made in connection with the murder of Juanderius Woods. Homicide detectives identified 27-year-old DeMarco Antonio Griffin of Birmingham as the suspect. Officers with the Community Safety Partnership division located Griffin's vehicle at an apartment complex in East Birmingham. After notifying the homicide unit and receiving assistance from the crime reduction team and the U.S. Marshals Task Force, Griffin was taken into custody without incident. The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office subsequently issued a murder warrant for his arrest.
The investigation has suggested a possible motive rooted in a previous homicide case involving Woods' son, Juanderius Mar'Quez Woods Jr. The younger Woods, along with another individual, had been charged with capital murder in the 2020 shooting death of Tyrese Morrow. However, the charges against Woods Jr. were eventually dropped. It has been rumored, though not officially confirmed, that DeMarco Griffin is the brother of a witness who was involved in the case against Woods Jr. and was later killed.
