In the early hours of a summer morning in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of a young man was tragically cut short. Damein Dewayne Barber, a 19-year-old male, was discovered unresponsive in the yard of a residence in the 1600 block of 27th Street North on July 25, 2023. A Birmingham police officer on patrol made the somber discovery at approximately 12:40 a.m.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Barber was quickly transported to UAB Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Barber's death was the result of a gunshot wound, turning a death investigation into a homicide case.
Known affectionately as 'Lil Dame,' Barber was born on August 22, 2003. He was a product of the Birmingham School system, having attended Hemphill Elementary School, Arrington Middle School, and A.H. Parker High School. He was known for his passion for football and basketball and cherished the time he spent with his family and friends.
