On a winter evening in Anniston, Alabama, the life of 21-year-old Charrell Latrezz Brown, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On January 16, 2023, what began as a confrontation in the 5100 block of McClellan Boulevard escalated into a violent exchange of gunfire around 9:45 p.m. Brown and another man, 43-year-old Carlos Miller, were both struck by multiple gunshots during the altercation.
Emergency services transported Brown to Stringfellow Memorial Hospital, where he was ultimately
pronounced dead. Miller was taken to Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, where he also succumbed to his injuries. Investigators later determined that the two men had shot each other during the dispute. Brown, a former student at Anniston High School and a member of the Class of 2018, was remembered for his talent on the football field and his vibrant personality.
In the wake of the double homicide, the Anniston Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. On January 17, 2023, investigators arrested 18-year-old Makotrick L. Ball and charged him with murder in connection with the deaths of both Brown and Miller. While authorities have not publicly detailed Ball's specific role in the fatal incident, he was taken into custody and booked into the Calhoun County Jail. He was held without bond under Aniah's Law as the investigation into the violent deaths continued.
Funeral services for Charrell Brown were held on January 21, 2023, at the Carver Community Center in Anniston, followed by his interment at Edgemont Cemetery. The community mourned the loss of the young man known for his athletic abilities and remembered by family and friends. The case remains an active investigation as law enforcement continues to seek information from the public.
