In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 18-year-old Rayshod Goldthwaite was tragically cut short. A recent graduate of George W. Carver High School, the young Black male was known for his efforts to give back to his community. He had started an initiative with a friend to feed and clothe the homeless in a local park, an endeavor that began with just $30 and a desire to help.
On June 5, 2022, while driving in the 600 block of Third Avenue North, another
vehicle reportedly pulled alongside Goldthwaite's car. Gunfire erupted from the other vehicle, striking Goldthwaite. The fatal gunshot wound caused him to lose control of his car and crash into a building at 608 Second Ave. North. Birmingham Police North Precinct officers were dispatched to the scene just after 1 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Goldthwaite unresponsive inside the wrecked vehicle. Despite the efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation into the shooting suggested a targeted attack, though a motive was not immediately clear. Law enforcement officials began gathering leads in the case, but as of the initial reports, no arrests had been made and no suspects had been publicly identified. The investigation into the death of Rayshod Goldthwaite remains ongoing.
