On a summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 21-year-old Keanna Shabree Kelley was cut short. A Black female from Gadsden, she was fatally shot on Saturday, August 1, 2020, during what police described as a domestic dispute. The incident unfolded around 9:11 p.m. at a residence on Kawanda Lane.
Birmingham Police Department's East Precinct officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance. While en route, a second call reported that someone had been shot.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Kelley unresponsive on the steps of the home, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced her deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation suggested that Kelley had attempted to force her way into the residence, which led to a physical altercation before the shooting occurred. One individual was taken into custody in connection with the incident.
After a thorough review of the evidence gathered by investigators, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office determined that the shooting was justifiable. As a result, no criminal charges were filed in the death of Keanna Shabree Kelley, and the case was reclassified as a justified death investigation.
