In the late afternoon of October 5, 2019, Miko Steadman Marks, a 47-year-old Black female, was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by her son in Bessemer, Alabama. As they were traveling over the Mary Susan Bryant Bridge on Ninth Avenue North, another vehicle pulled alongside them and an occupant opened fire. Marks was struck by the gunfire, though her son was not injured.
In a desperate attempt to get his mother medical help, her son tried to drive her to the hospital. However, he ended up crashing their car at the intersection of Ninth Avenue North and 19th Street North. Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident, and from there, Marks was transported to UAB Hospital. Despite the efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at 5:32 p.m.
The Bessemer Police Department launched an investigation into the fatal drive-by shooting. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Miko Steadman Marks, and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown to the public. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the case to come forward.
