In the late afternoon of October 5, 2019, Miko Steadman Marks, a 47-year-old Black female, was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by her son in Bessemer, Alabama. As they were traveling over the Mary Susan Bryant Bridge on Ninth Avenue North, another vehicle pulled alongside them and an occupant opened fire. Marks was struck by the gunfire, though her son was not injured.
