On February 14, 2022, 15-year-old Janiyah Simmons was fatally shot in Bessemer, Alabama. The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. at a residence on the 300 block of 30th Street South. According to the Bessemer Police Department, Simmons and an 18-year-old male friend, identified as Raukeem Cunningham, were handling an AK-47 style rifle when it discharged, striking Simmons in the chest. She was transported to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m.
