In the winter of 2022, a bright and promising life was tragically cut short in Bessemer, Alabama. Janiyah Simmons, a 15-year-old female, was fatally shot on the evening of Monday, February 14th. A freshman at Wenonah High School, she was known as an honor student who was also in the gifted program. Her mother described her as a young woman full of love and joy, with a passion for doing hair, cooking, and fashion. She had an outgoing personality and was deeply loved by her family and friends.
On that fateful evening, just before 9 p.m., Janiyah was at a home in Bessemer with her 18-year-old friend, Raukeem Cunningham. According to police reports, the two were playing with a gun when it discharged. A single shot struck Janiyah in the chest. She was rushed to UAB Hospital but succumbed to her injuries less than an hour later. The authorities later specified that the weapon involved was an AK-47 style rifle, and they indicated that the suspect was aware the gun was loaded.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Raukeem Cunningham remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. He was subsequently arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with Janiyah's death. He was held at the Bessemer City Jail before being transferred to the Jefferson County Jail, with his bond set at $30,000.
While out on bond for the manslaughter charge, Cunningham was arrested again in August 2024. This time, he faced the more severe charge of capital murder in connection with a triple homicide that occurred at a Bessemer gas station. Following this new arrest, a judge revoked his bond in the case related to Janiyah's death. The trial for the manslaughter charge was anticipated to take place in December 2024.
