In the early morning hours of August 20, 2024, D'Anthony Dejuan Jones, a 22-year-old man, was fatally shot in Birmingham, Alabama. He was sitting in the passenger seat of a car in the 2100 block of Avenue I in the Ensley neighborhood when an unknown individual fired multiple shots into the vehicle. Struck by the gunfire, Jones was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The Birmingham Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the shooting.
As of now, the case remains unsolved, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified. Authorities have not released a motive for the killing. Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama has offered a cash reward of up to $5,000 for any information that leads to an arrest in connection to the case. Jones's mother has publicly pleaded for justice for her son and has called for changes to Alabama's open-carry gun laws.
D'Anthony was a former drum major at Bessemer City High School and a band member at Alabama State University. He had aspirations of becoming a Birmingham firefighter. His family remembers him as a person with a big heart who was very giving and loving. A year after his death, his family continues to seek answers and closure, holding vigils to honor his memory and to appeal to the public for any information that might help solve his murder.
