In the early morning hours of October 6, 2023, the life of 22-year-old Jjuan James Cole was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. The fatal incident unfolded in the parking lot of a nightclub located in the 800 block of 2nd Avenue North in Birmingham, Alabama. Just after 1:00 a.m., a North Precinct officer on patrol nearby heard the gunshots and proceeded to the scene.
Upon arrival, the officer discovered a grim tableau.
Cole was found lying on the ground, having sustained an apparent gunshot wound. He was not the only victim. Nearby lay another man, 27-year-old Dyron Mays-Perry, who had also been fatally shot. A third victim, an adult female, was found with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after and pronounced both Cole and Mays-Perry deceased at the scene. The female victim was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of her critical injuries.
The preliminary investigation by the Birmingham Police Department suggests that an unknown suspect or suspects opened fire in the parking lot, striking the three victims. Several vehicles and a local business were also damaged by the gunfire. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and as of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the double homicide. Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting and have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible.
