Rodney Derwin Matthews, a 37-year-old Black man from Birmingham, was killed in December 2010 in a shooting that left him found alone in the driver’s seat of a green Honda Civic in the 1900 block of 31st Avenue North in North Birmingham. Reports from the time place the discovery on December 10, while his obituary states that he died on December 9, 2010, suggesting the violence unfolded late and the final confirmation of his death came as authorities worked backward through the case.
