In the summer of 1972, Linda Clark, a 19-year-old woman from the Chicago area, embarked on what should have been an exciting trip with her close friend, Claudia Bidstrup, also 19. Their journey, however, came to a horrific and premature end in a wooded area in southwestern Michigan. Their murders were part of a string of violent crimes that terrorized the Kalamazoo area that year, perpetrated by a pair of killers, one of whom was a teenager.

On July 5, 1972, while traveling through Michigan, Linda and Claudia pulled into a gas station near Galesburg. There, they encountered Danny Ranes, who was working as an attendant, and his 15-year-old accomplice, Brent Eugene Koster, a tall teenager known as "Stretch." Under the pretense of car trouble, Ranes disabled their vehicle by removing a spark plug wire. He then directed the two unsuspecting young women to the back of the station, where he and Koster ambushed them with knives. The two friends were held captive, assaulted, and ultimately murdered.

After killing Linda and Claudia, Ranes and Koster wrapped their bodies in a blanket and placed them inside a car. Koster then drove the vehicle to a remote, wooded area near Galesburg and set it on fire in an attempt to destroy any evidence. For fourteen days, the fate of the two Chicago women remained a mystery. It wasn't until a passing motorcyclist stumbled upon the burned-out car that their remains were discovered. The decomposed bodies were found bound with ropes, confirming the violent nature of their deaths.

The investigation into the double homicide initially left police with few leads. The break in the case came a few months later, in September 1972, when a guilt-ridden Brent Koster began confessing his involvement in the crimes to street workers, one of whom was a police informant. Koster was arrested on September 5 and gave a full confession, implicating Danny Ranes as the main instigator not only in the murders of Linda and Claudia but in other brutal killings as well.

Based on Koster's detailed testimony, authorities arrested Ranes and charged him with four murders, including those of Linda Clark and Claudia Bidstrup. To avoid a harsher sentence, Koster agreed to a plea deal. In exchange for his cooperation and testimony against Ranes, he was allowed to plead guilty to the second-degree murder of Linda Clark. Probate authorities waived jurisdiction over the teenager, allowing him to be tried as an adult due to the heinous nature of the crimes. Koster later admitted that while Ranes assisted in killing Bidstrup, he himself had killed Linda.

Danny Ranes was convicted of first-degree murder for another killing and pleaded no contest to second-degree murder for the deaths of Linda and Claudia, receiving two additional life sentences. Brent Koster was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for his role in the slayings. For decades, he remained incarcerated. However, in November 2020, the Michigan Department of Corrections announced that Koster would be granted parole. The decision was met with dismay by law enforcement officials, with the Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney expressing that he was "very troubled" by the release of an "admitted serial rapist, serial murderer." Brent Koster was released from prison in 2021, nearly 49 years after he took part in the murders of Linda Clark and Claudia Bidstrup.
