In the early hours of a mid-June day, a heated argument between a Detroit couple escalated into a tragedy that ended a life. Alicia Ferguson, a 35-year-old woman, was fatally shot in an apartment on West Grand Boulevard. The incident, which occurred on June 17, 2024, cut her life short in what authorities have described as a domestic dispute turned deadly. When police and paramedics arrived at the scene, they found Ferguson in the bedroom of the apartment with a gunshot wound to her neck.
Despite the efforts of emergency medical technicians, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation swiftly led to the arrest of Ferguson's 40-year-old boyfriend, Jelani Ahmed Shakoor. According to reports, a verbal altercation between the two took a violent turn when Shakoor allegedly produced a firearm and shot Ferguson. This was not the first instance of gun violence she had reportedly suffered at his hands. An unconfirmed report suggests that a previous shooting by Shakoor had resulted in Ferguson losing her leg. Despite this, she had apparently forgiven him and the two remained in a relationship.
Following the fatal shooting, Jelani Ahmed Shakoor was taken into custody and now faces serious charges. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged him with second-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. During his arraignment, Shakoor stood mute, prompting the court to enter a not guilty plea on his behalf. He was remanded to jail without bond. His probable cause conference was scheduled for late June, with a preliminary examination set for early July to determine if there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
