In the early hours of Mother's Day, May 12, 2019, the life of 24-year-old Destiny Desiree Reed was tragically cut short in a brazen act of violence on the east side of Detroit. Just before 1 a.m., as she was getting out of a vehicle at a home near Van Dyke and Gratiot Avenue, another car sped by, and the sound of gunshots shattered the night's quiet. Reed was struck in the head.
Despite a frantic 911 call and the quick response of paramedics, her injuries were fatal.
Witnesses in the neighborhood were startled by the sudden violence. One resident reported hearing a cry for 'Help' repeated three times, followed by the pop of gunfire. Neighbors were left terrified by the incident, with the gunshots rattling them in the middle of the night. Police canvassed the area, inquiring if residents had any security camera footage that might have captured the shooting, but initial searches came up empty.
Investigators began to explore possible connections to other recent acts of violence in the city, considering the possibility of gang involvement. Of particular interest was the murder of another 24-year-old woman, Nyree Henderson, which occurred just a day later on the same side of the city. A significant lead that emerged in both cases was the reported involvement of a black Chrysler 300. While authorities did not label the incidents as the work of a serial killer, they did not rule out a connection between the homicides that had instilled fear in the community.
In the wake of her death, Destiny Desiree Reed was remembered as a loving mother. She was laid to rest on Friday, May 17, 2019, at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit. The investigation into her murder is ongoing, and authorities have continued to appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the person or people responsible for her death. No arrests have been publicly announced in the case.
