In the early hours of Mother's Day, May 12, 2019, the life of 24-year-old Destiny Desiree Reed was tragically cut short in a brazen act of violence on the east side of Detroit. Just before 1 a.m., as she was getting out of a vehicle at a home near Van Dyke and Gratiot Avenue, another car sped by, and the sound of gunshots shattered the night's quiet. Reed was struck in the head. Despite a frantic 911 call and the quick response of paramedics, her injuries were fatal.
