In the warm summer night of August 11, 2017, a gathering of friends around a bonfire in a Detroit park turned into a scene of terror and tragedy. Among those enjoying the evening was 25-year-old Andrea Gardner. Shortly after midnight, the peaceful atmosphere was shattered by the eruption of gunfire in what witnesses would later describe as an ambush.
Gardner was attending a bonfire party near Harry Laker Park on Central Avenue when an unknown assailant approached and opened fire on the
group of approximately eight people. At least 30 shots were fired, sending attendees scrambling for cover. Gardner was struck in the head and tragically died at the scene. A 25-year-old man was also hit by the gunfire and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The brazen attack, which police were told may have been carried out with an AK-47, left the community in shock. Witnesses reported seeing a black Charger speeding away from the area immediately after the shooting, though authorities did not immediately confirm if the vehicle was connected to the crime. In the immediate aftermath, the identity of the shooter remained a mystery, and law enforcement appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest.
Despite the initial investigation and pleas for information, there have been no publicly reported arrests or identification of any suspects in the years following the deadly shooting. The case of who killed Andrea Gardner and the young man with her that night remains unresolved, leaving their families and the community still waiting for justice.
