A bright and promising life was tragically cut short on October 16, 2016, when 15-year-old Jada Rankin, a female, was fatally shot in Detroit, Michigan. The incident occurred in the early morning hours outside her grandmother's home on Ardmore Street, where family and friends had gathered to celebrate her brother's birthday. Jada was a beloved daughter and a standout student at Sterling Heights High School, where she maintained a 4.0 GPA, played as a kicker for the football team, and had
recently been nominated for homecoming queen.
The senseless act of violence unfolded when a driver was seen speeding up and down the residential street. Jada's brother shouted at the driver, urging him to slow down. In response, the driver stopped his vehicle, opened the door, and fired multiple shots into the crowd of people who were outside the home. Tragically, one of the bullets struck Jada in the abdomen. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
In the wake of the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, and despite the passage of time, the case remains unsolved. Authorities have described the suspect's vehicle as a gray or silver sedan, possibly a mid-2000s Chevrolet Impala or Lumina. Over the years, Jada's family has made numerous public pleas for information that could lead to the killer's arrest, and various rewards have been offered through Crime Stoppers.
The profound loss of Jada has been a source of enduring pain for her family and the community. In her memory, a playground at Sawyer Park in Detroit was renamed the Jada Rankin Playground, a testament to the vibrant young life that was taken too soon. Her family continues to honor her memory through community events and by advocating for an end to gun violence, holding onto hope that one day justice will be served for Jada.
