In the early morning hours of February 9, 2013, Jennifer Scavone, a 32-year-old female, was driving home from her job as a waitress at the Bouzouki Lounge in Detroit's Greektown neighborhood. Her journey was tragically cut short when she was shot and killed while on northbound Interstate 75. At approximately 3:40 a.m., a Michigan Department of Transportation courtesy van driver discovered Scavone's SUV pulled over on the shoulder of the highway near Mack Avenue.
She was found deceased inside her vehicle, which was riddled with bullet holes on the driver's side. An autopsy later confirmed that she had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Scavone's death, led by the Michigan State Police, quickly uncovered several potential leads. Surveillance footage from near her workplace revealed a vehicle that appeared to be following her as she left. Police identified the suspect vehicle as a gray or silver 2006 Dodge Stratus that was missing both of its front wheel covers and possibly had damage to the trunk lid and right front quarter panel. Investigators appealed to the public for any information regarding this vehicle or its occupants, but it is unclear if this lead ever developed further.
A significant focus of the investigation centered on Jennifer Scavone's personal life, particularly a long and contentious custody battle with the father of her oldest child. Court records indicated that the dispute had been ongoing for nearly a decade and involved issues of child support and parenting time. Friends and colleagues of Scavone reported that she had lived in fear for her life due to these personal issues. It was also reported that Scavone was a witness in a criminal case against the father of her child. While police acknowledged that they were looking into numerous suspects, no arrests have ever been publicly announced in connection with Jennifer Scavone's murder. The case has since gone cold, leaving her family and friends without answers or justice for her untimely death.
