In a quiet Detroit neighborhood, a mother's life was tragically cut short in an act of violence that stunned those who knew her. Lorraine Smith, a 54-year-old female, was found deceased in her home on Bringard Drive on the morning of Saturday, October 14, 2023. Responding to a report of a shooting, Detroit police officers discovered her in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the back of her head.
Medics arrived at the scene and pronounced her dead.
The investigation into her death quickly led to a familiar face. Authorities allege that a physical altercation between Lorraine Smith and her son escalated, culminating in the fatal shooting. Prosecutors stated that her son, 27-year-old Malik Asante Smith, produced a handgun and fired it multiple times, fatally wounding his mother.
Following the incident, Malik Asante Smith was arrested and charged in connection with his mother's death. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged him with first-degree murder and felony firearm. He was arraigned on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in 36th District Court and was remanded to jail. Subsequent court dates, including a probable cause conference and a preliminary examination, were scheduled for late October and early November of 2023. If convicted of the charges, he faces the possibility of life in prison.
