In the spring of 2019, a dispute over a mere forty dollars at a dice game tragically escalated, claiming the life of 38-year-old Willecious Moffett in Mobile, Alabama. The fatal encounter unfolded on the evening of Friday, March 15, at a gathering on Dolphin Island Parkway where a number of people were gambling. An argument erupted over the small sum of money, quickly spiraling into a violent shootout.
When the gunfire ceased, Willecious Moffett and another man, 27-year-old Carlos Cunningham, lay dead.
The investigation into the double homicide led police to two brothers, Cedric and Jerome Williams. Within days of the shooting, both brothers were taken into custody and charged with murder. Authorities reported that the deadly altercation was the result of the dispute during the dice game. One of the brothers was also injured by a gunshot during the chaotic incident. The case, which became one of the oldest on the court's docket, would see a lengthy legal process before reaching a conclusion.
After a mistrial in a previous proceeding, the case against Cedric and Jerome Williams went to trial again. In November 2024, a Mobile jury delivered a split verdict. Jerome Williams was found guilty of the murder of Willecious Moffett. His brother, Cedric Williams, was found not guilty of murder but was convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter in Moffett's death. Testimony during the trial revealed that Moffett had attempted to flee the scene in a car before being struck by a fatal gunshot that penetrated the passenger-side door. The Mobile County District Attorney's Office announced its intention to seek the maximum possible sentences for both brothers for their roles in the violent deaths that stemmed from a forty-dollar disagreement.
