In the fading daylight of a November evening in Mobile, Alabama, the life of 25-year-old Joseph Evans Jr. was tragically cut short. On November 11, 2024, police responded to a call of a shooting at the Dauphin Gate Apartments on Dauphin Street. There, between two of the apartment buildings, they discovered Evans, who had succumbed to gunshot wounds.
Another individual was also injured in the incident but was transported to a local hospital by a private vehicle with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly led authorities to a suspect. Two days later, investigators apprehended 19-year-old Nyyon Elijah Sanders during the execution of a search warrant. Sanders was no stranger to the criminal justice system; at the time of Evans' death, he was out on bond for a 2022 homicide. A condition of his release was the wearing of an ankle monitor, a device intended to track his whereabouts. However, it was discovered that Sanders had allowed the battery on his ankle monitor to die in the hours leading up to the shooting, a critical failure in the monitoring system that allowed him to be in a location he was prohibited from visiting.
The circumstances of Evans' death and the fact that the primary suspect was already facing a murder charge sent ripples of anger and grief through the community. The family of Joseph Evans Jr., affectionately known as 'baby Joe,' held a vigil to remember their loved one, releasing red and black balloons, his favorite colors, into the sky. They expressed their profound loss and their belief that the crime could have been prevented had the suspect remained in custody.
Nyyon Sanders was subsequently charged with murder and first-degree robbery in connection with the death of Joseph Evans Jr. His bond from the previous 2022 murder charge was revoked, and he was taken into custody. In court, Sanders entered a plea of not guilty to the new charges. The case has highlighted concerns about the effectiveness of ankle monitoring for individuals out on bond for violent crimes and has left a family and a community mourning the senseless loss of a young life.
