In the warm early evening of June 19, 2022, a crawfish boil at a friend's house on the 1900 block of West Clarke Avenue in Mobile, Alabama, took a tragic turn. Inside the residence, 23-year-old Karlos Pettway was fatally shot. When Mobile Police Department officers arrived at approximately 4:15 p.m., they discovered Pettway deceased at the scene. Known affectionately as 'Cortez' to his family and 'BigLo' to his friends, Pettway was a graduate of Mattie T.
Blount High School and the father of a young daughter. His family described him as a joyful person who was in the process of turning his life around for the sake of his child.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect. Less than a month after the incident, on July 13, 2022, 18-year-old Charvez Green turned himself in to the police. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Karlos Pettway. Investigators determined that Green had been waiting inside the house at the crawfish boil before shooting Pettway five times.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to Pettway's grieving family. In April 2025, a Mobile County jury found Charvez Green guilty of murder after a few hours of deliberation. The following month, on May 29, 2025, a judge sentenced Green to life in prison. The Mobile County District Attorney stated that the sentence reflected the serious nature of the crime and ensured accountability for the 'horrific attack' on Karlos Pettway.
