In the early morning hours of Saturday, February 1, 2025, a night out with friends for 22-year-old Hunter Lins turned into a tragedy that ended his life. The incident unfolded in the parking lot of the Alabama Bar & Lounge on Airport Boulevard in Mobile, Alabama, leaving a community in shock and a family devastated by the sudden and violent loss of a young man known for his vibrant and friendly nature.
What began as an argument inside the bar between Lins and 20-year-old Mathew Sanders
led to Sanders being asked to leave the establishment. According to prosecutors, Lins followed him outside with the intention of apologizing and resolving the conflict. However, the situation escalated into a physical fight. It was then that Sanders allegedly retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and fired shots. Lins was struck by the gunfire, as was another man. Lins was transported by a personal vehicle to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries later that morning.
In the immediate aftermath, police who had responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 1:54 a.m. located one injured victim at the scene and identified Sanders as the suspect, taking him into custody. He was initially charged with two counts of assault. Following the news of Lins's death, one of those charges was upgraded to murder, and he also faced a charge of first-degree assault.
The case is now moving through the legal system. Mathew Sanders has pleaded not guilty to the charges, asserting that he acted in self-defense and claiming he was jumped outside the bar.
