Mfundisi Mingo was a 46-year-old Black man remembered by those who knew him as a loving, positive, and helpful person. His life was cut short in a shooting in Mobile, Alabama, in the spring of 2022.
On the evening of Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at approximately 6:38 p.m., officers with the Mobile Police Department were called to the 2900 block of Steadham Drive to investigate a shooting. There, they found Mfundisi Mingo suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services transported him to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Mr. Mingo succumbed to his injuries the following day, May 11, 2022.
The Mobile Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. Through their work, detectives identified 20-year-old Zyione K. Fagin as the suspect involved in the fatal shooting. Ten days later, on Friday, May 20, 2022, authorities located and arrested Fagin. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Mfundisi Mingo.
Following his arrest, Fagin pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. As the case proceeded, Fagin, who was from Prichard and 20 years old at the time of the incident, requested to be treated as a youthful offender. This special status would have sealed the case from public view and limited his potential sentence to a maximum of three years in prison if he were convicted.
In September 2023, a Mobile County Circuit Judge denied Fagin’s request for youthful offender status. The judge ordered that he would stand trial for murder as an adult. As of that month, the case was proceeding through the court system.
