In the quiet evening of September 19, 2026, a violent altercation in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, tragically cut short the life of 42-year-old Steven Ludlam. The events of that night began to unfold at a residence where an argument escalated to the point of gunfire. Suffering from a gunshot wound, Ludlam managed to drive himself away from the scene of the shooting, seeking help at his brother's home on Cheatham Street. It was there, sitting in his truck, that responding Pine Bluff Police Officers found him shortly after 9:00 PM. Though still responsive when help arrived, the injury proved to be fatal. He was rushed to Jefferson Regional Medical Center, but succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The investigation into Ludlam's death quickly pointed to another location where the initial altercation and shooting occurred. At this second residence, detectives discovered a grim scene with blood at the entryway and throughout the inside of the home, clear evidence of the violent struggle that had taken place. The subsequent investigation led to the identification of a suspect, 27-year-old William “Chuck” Irwin of Star City. Witnesses reported that following the shooting, Irwin had attempted to have a witness dispose of the shotgun used in the incident. When the witness refused, Irwin reportedly fled with the weapon in a black bag.

Through diligent police work, William "Chuck" Irwin was located and taken into custody. During questioning, Irwin allegedly admitted to investigators that he had intended to scare Ludlam and confessed to pulling the trigger, ultimately shooting him. He then led law enforcement to the location where he had hidden the firearm, which was subsequently recovered by officers. Irwin was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by certain persons. A Pine Bluff District Judge set his bond at $250,000, and he was booked into the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Detention Center. His next scheduled court appearance was set for November 16, 2026. The case against Irwin is now proceeding through the legal system, with the charges representing serious allegations for which he will be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
