On what began as a routine patrol day on April 14, 1972, Philip Cardillo, a 32-year-old White male police officer, and his partner, Vito Navarra, responded to a distress call. The call, a "10-13" indicating an officer needed assistance, came from 102 West 116th Street in Manhattan, the location of the Nation of Islam Mosque No. 7. The report of an officer in trouble was a fabrication, a lure that would place Cardillo and his fellow officers in a volatile and ultimately tragic situation.
