On September 2, 2023, 40-year-old Juan Alvarez from La Marque, Texas, was found deceased on the shoulder of the Highway 146 southbound feeder road in Texas City. Responding to reports of gunfire around 4:42 p.m., officers discovered Alvarez's body partially in a traffic lane. He was transported to HCA Mainland Center Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Texas City Police Department launched an investigation that led to the arrest of four individuals connected to Alvarez's death. Aaron Rodriguez, 31, was charged with murder and aggravated kidnapping, with his bond set at $400,000. Tara Rodriguez and Cassie Lopez were each charged with aggravated kidnapping, with bonds of $250,000. Michael Hernandez faced the same charge, with a bond of $300,000. Aaron and Tara Rodriguez were held in the Galveston County Jail, while Lopez and Hernandez were detained in Brazoria and Harris County Jails, respectively, pending transfer to Galveston County.
According to affidavits, a witness reported being blindfolded, beaten, and threatened after the incident. This individual was later found at the Executive Inn and Suites in southeast Houston. Surveillance footage from the motel showed the suspects assisting the witness into a room before leaving. The witness eventually sought medical attention and provided information to investigators, leading to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
The investigation revealed that prior to the shooting, Alvarez was seen being picked up by Aaron Rodriguez, with Mardo Palma in the passenger seat. An argument ensued, during which Alvarez reportedly fired a shot out of the vehicle's window. When his gun jammed, Rodriguez allegedly seized the weapon and shot Alvarez multiple times. Following the shooting, Palma was reportedly restrained and left at the motel by Rodriguez and two female accomplices.
