On a summer day in 1930, Joseph Perriano, a male associate of the powerful crime figure Giuseppe Morello, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. The streets of East Harlem, a territory under the control of Morello's faction in the burgeoning Mafia, were simmering with tension. A bloody power struggle, later known as the Castellammarese War, was underway, pitting Joe 'The Boss' Masseria and his allies against a rival group led by Salvatore Maranzano.
Morello, a seasoned and respected Mafioso, served as Masseria's 'war chief,' making him a high-value target for the opposition.
On August 15th, while Morello and Perriano were in Morello's office collecting cash receipts, the simmering conflict erupted into violence. Two assailants, loyal to the Castellammarese faction, stormed the location. Perriano was the first to be gunned down. Morello, wise to the ways of the street, attempted a desperate escape but found no refuge and was shot down as well. The brazen attack was a significant blow to the Masseria organization and a clear message of the Castellammarese faction's deadly intent.
The murders of Perriano and Morello were among the first major casualties of the Castellammarese War, a conflict that would reshape the landscape of organized crime in New York. While the immediate aftermath of the shooting left a void in the leadership of the Masseria faction, the identity of the triggermen remained a matter of underworld speculation. It wasn't until years later that Joseph Valachi, a mobster who turned government informant, shed light on the identities of the assassins. Valachi identified one of Morello's killers as a Castellammarese gunman known to him only as 'Buster from Chicago,' leaving the full story of the hitmen and any official arrests to be lost to the secretive and violent history of the Mafia.
