On a Saturday morning in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, an altercation between two men ended in the death of Otis Daniels, a 29-year-old Black man. The incident took place on October 5, 2024, at a residence on East 34th Avenue. Just after 11 a.m., police officers responded to a call about a shooting in the area. They arrived to find Daniels near the intersection of East 34th Avenue and South Missouri Street with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders transported Daniels
to Jefferson Regional Medical Center for treatment. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 11:58 a.m. Investigators located the scene of the shooting near the front door of a home at 1120 E. 34th Ave. The resident, 44-year-old John Carter, was identified as the shooter and was taken into custody at the scene without incident.
According to statements from witnesses and the suspect given to police, the violence erupted after Daniels came to Carter’s home. For reasons that remain unknown, Daniels reportedly began hitting Carter in the face while they were on the porch. Police stated that after being battered, Carter got up, went into his residence, and came back outside with a revolver. He then allegedly shot Daniels multiple times. Daniels fled from the porch to the nearby intersection where officers later found him.
Following his arrest, Carter was interviewed by detectives and then taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries he sustained during the initial altercation. He was released from the hospital later that same evening and booked into the Jefferson County Detention Center. Carter is facing a charge of capital murder in the death of Otis Daniels.
