In the summer of 2021, a domestic dispute in a parking lot escalated into a tragedy that cut short the life of 27-year-old Rasheem Lavonte' Morris. On the morning of July 23rd, at the Beech Street Apartments in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, events unfolded that would mark the city's 16th homicide of the year. Morris was present when an argument broke out, and his attempt to intervene proved fatal.
Gunshots rang out, fired from a rifle, striking Morris in his upper and lower body.
Another man was also hit and was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Morris in the parking lot, suffering from his wounds. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
In the days that followed the shooting, investigators from the Pine Bluff Police Department worked to piece together the events that led to the violence. Their investigation pointed them toward a single suspect: 22-year-old Datreon Morris Sr. Authorities believe that Datreon Morris Sr. was the shooter and that Rasheem Morris's attempt to de-escalate the initial domestic dispute led to his death.
Law enforcement officials issued warrants for the arrest of Datreon Morris Sr., launching a search for the man they identified as the perpetrator. The Pine Bluff Police Department asked the public for any information that might lead to his apprehension. As of the fall of 2023, the suspect was still being sought by authorities, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a young man who died while trying to help.
