In the midst of a violent weekend in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, that saw multiple shootings, 21-year-old Marquarius Samonte Mann Williams lost his life. On October 17, 2021, Williams was one of thirteen people shot in the city, and one of two fatalities that night. The incident that claimed his life unfolded outside the Sahara Temple, where a party was being held as part of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff's homecoming festivities.
Williams was reportedly in line, anticipating to enter the event, when gunfire erupted.
His sister, Marshay Williams, had been in contact with him just moments before the shooting, and he had conveyed his excitement about attending the party. Following the tragic event, Marquarius Williams was transported to Jefferson Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:32 a.m. His body was subsequently sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy. In the wake of the shooting, Williams' family remembered him as the life of the party and a comedian who brought laughter to their lives. His sister recounted her last conversation with her brother, a heartbreaking call where he told her he had been shot in the heart and believed he was dying.
The broader Pine Bluff community expressed frustration with what they perceived as a lack of transparency and information from local law enforcement regarding the wave of gun violence. Family members of the victims and other residents voiced concerns about the police department's response and communication with the public. Interim Police Chief Lloyd Franklin acknowledged these concerns and stated the department's commitment to improving community relations and addressing internal challenges like staffing shortages. As of December 2021, no arrests had been publicly announced, and no suspects had been identified in connection with the shooting that resulted in the death of Marquarius Williams. The investigation into the deadly shooting remained ongoing, with authorities appealing to the public for any information that could help bring resolution to the case.
