In the early afternoon hours of July 29, 2023, the life of 49-year-old Christopher Garland Harris, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The events of that day began to unfold around 1:08 P.M. when police officers were called to the vicinity of 801 South Myrtle Street in response to reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they encountered Harris, who, when questioned, denied having any knowledge of the shots.
The officers proceeded to canvass the area, discovering numerous shell casings in the street, a clear indication of the recent violence that had transpired. After gathering evidence from the scene, the officers departed at approximately 1:40 P.M., leaving a temporary and deceptive calm in their wake.
The tranquility was shattered a mere ten minutes later when a second dispatch call sent officers rushing back to the very same location. This time, they found Christopher Harris gravely wounded. He was discovered lying face down on the ground at 3106 West 8th Avenue, having sustained a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services were immediately summoned, and Harris was transported by ambulance to Jefferson Regional Medical Center for initial treatment. His condition was critical, necessitating a transfer to the University of Arkansas for Medical Science for more advanced care.
Despite the efforts of the medical teams at UAMS, Harris’s injuries proved to be too severe. On the evening of July 31, 2023, at approximately 8:10 P.M., detectives with the Pine Bluff Police Department received the somber news from the Pulaski County Coroner's Office. Christopher Garland Harris had been pronounced deceased at 7:57 P.M., succumbing to the gunshot wound he had sustained two days prior.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Pine Bluff Police Department launched a homicide investigation. However, the initial inquiries did not yield immediate leads. As of the reports issued following the incident, authorities had not been able to identify any suspects in the fatal shooting of Christopher Garland Harris. The case remains an open investigation, with law enforcement appealing to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest.
