In the winter of 1920, a tragic event unfolded in the city of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, leading to the death of a dedicated law enforcement officer. Detective C.C. Lynn, a 35-year-old White/Caucasian male, lost his life in the line of duty on February 5th of that year. The incident began when Detective Lynn responded to a shooting call at a residence situated between South Texas Street, South Georgia Street, and East Second Avenue.
As officers arrived and surrounded the home, the situation
escalated dramatically. A man inside the house, who was known to have a history of mental health issues and violent behavior, fired a shotgun from an upstairs window. Detective Lynn was struck in the head by the gunfire, and he succumbed to the fatal wound. The standoff with the suspect continued to intensify, drawing the attention and ire of local citizens.
In a dramatic and violent conclusion to the siege, a group of citizens took matters into their own hands. They set fire to the house in an attempt to force the suspect out into the open. When the man finally emerged from the burning structure, he was met with a hail of bullets from the assembled citizens and was killed at the scene. In the ensuing chaos, a stray bullet tragically killed a female bystander who was located two blocks away from the confrontation. Detective Lynn was survived by his wife, daughter, parents, and several siblings.
