In the early morning hours of December 29, 2015, the life of 30-year-old Derrick Raymond Matthews was tragically cut short in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He was discovered inside a red vehicle at the intersection of 10th Avenue and Palm Street, having been fatally shot. Born in Lake Village, Arkansas, Matthews was a former student of Pine Bluff High School and a father to three children.
The investigation into the death of the Black male quickly led Pine Bluff police to identify two
individuals of interest. The day after Matthews's body was found, authorities arrested 33-year-old Trevion Dickson. However, his charges were for multiple counts of failure to appear in court and appeared to be unrelated to the homicide investigation.
Another man, 24-year-old Quincy Chambers, was identified as a suspect and a warrant for capital murder was issued for his arrest. Considered armed and dangerous, Chambers evaded law enforcement for a short time. On January 6, 2016, a manhunt ensued after Chambers fled from police. This chase ended in the early hours of January 7 near the Hensley community, where he was taken into custody. Chambers was subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with Derrick Matthews's death.
