Werling Mendez, an 18-year-old male from the Bronx, was killed during a violent outbreak of gunfire in the Eastchester section of the Bronx during the early morning hours of August 23, 2026. Shortly before 5:45 a.m., New York City police were called to the area of 1710 East 233rd Street, near Boston Road and within the 47th Precinct, after reports that several people had been shot.
The violence unfolded during what police sources described as a car meetup that had drawn people to the area through social media.
Mendez suffered a gunshot wound to the head during the shooting. Rather than being taken from the scene by an ambulance, he was transported by private vehicle to BronxCare Health System in critical condition. Despite efforts to save him, he later died from his injuries. The scene investigators encountered was extensive, with more than 60 spent shell casings reportedly recovered, indicating that a large number of shots had been fired during the chaotic confrontation.
Two other people were confirmed to have been struck by gunfire. A 22-year-old man was shot in the chest, while a 20-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the foot. Both were taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and were reported to be in stable condition. Two additional women, ages 25 and 37, were also hospitalized in stable condition. Police sources said those women had been robbed of wallets and jewelry during the disorder surrounding the shooting. Early reports created some confusion about whether all of the hospitalized victims had been shot, but subsequent accounts indicated that the two women had been victims of armed robberies rather than gunfire.
Investigators determined that an unidentified individual opened fire and then fled the area in an unknown direction. Authorities had not publicly identified the shooter or announced whether investigators believed Mendez was specifically targeted. The presence of numerous people at the car gathering, the large number of shell casings and the simultaneous robberies complicated the effort to establish exactly what triggered the gunfire and who may have been the intended target.
As of August 25, 2026, no arrests had been announced in connection with Mendez's death, and no suspect had been publicly named. The NYPD continued investigating the killing and the related shootings and robberies, seeking witnesses and other evidence that could identify the person or people responsible. The case remained active, with investigators working to reconstruct how a social-media-organized car gathering escalated into a deadly shooting that left Mendez dead and several other people injured or victimized.
