Assam Alshaif, a 21-year-old male from the Bronx, was killed on the morning of March 26, 2026, after a shooting near Jerome Avenue and Bainbridge Avenue in the Norwood section of the Bronx, close to Woodlawn Station and across from Woodlawn Cemetery. Police said officers responded at about 9:48 a.m. to a 911 call reporting a person shot within the 52nd Precinct. When they arrived, Alshaif was found unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. EMS rushed him to St.
Barnabas Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The shooting unfolded in a busy public area near the subway station and a bus stop. Witness accounts described a sudden burst of violence, with one eyewitness saying the shooter stood over Alshaif after he fell and fired additional shots while he was on the ground. A backpack and a pool of blood were seen on the sidewalk as police sealed off the area with crime scene tape. The scene drew immediate attention from nearby workers, commuters, and residents, and police quickly began searching the area around the station and nearby buses.
Investigators identified the suspect as Jadore Reid, 18, of Wakefield in the Bronx. Police said Reid was taken into custody the same day, in the confines of the 52nd Precinct. Initial reports said officers arrested him at or near the scene, while a witness claimed the suspected gunman ran toward Woodlawn Station, crossed through the station area, and tried to board a bus before police were alerted and moved in. Reid was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon; some reports specified two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
Prosecutors later described the killing as an execution-style attack. According to court-related reporting, Reid allegedly followed Alshaif off a New York City bus, pulled out a gun, shot him, and then continued firing after Alshaif collapsed. Officers were reportedly nearby, heard the gunfire, and saw Reid running with a gun. Reid was ordered held without bail after a court appearance. A Bronx District Attorney “Cases of Interest” calendar for late April 2026 listed Reid's case and stated that he was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly shooting Alshaif in the head on March 26, causing his death.
As the case developed, reporting connected Alshaif's killing to an earlier fatal shooting in Mount Vernon. The Journal News reported that Alshaif had been a suspect in the November 21, 2025 shooting death of 17-year-old Jaydin Maraj, who was shot in the head after gunfire erupted while he and others ran from a crowd in a parking lot on Eastchester Lane in Mount Vernon. Authorities reportedly believed Alshaif and another teenager were among those involved, and that Alshaif fired the shot that killed Maraj, though he had not been publicly charged before his own death. The report said Mount Vernon detectives had been working to build a case when Alshaif was killed in the Bronx.
That possible connection gave investigators a potential motive. The Journal News reported that Alshaif's death appeared to be retaliation for Maraj's killing, and that Reid allegedly told police he had done it for his friend. Relatives of Alshaif reportedly said they had heard he was on the phone planning to meet someone on a bus, which struck them as unusual because he normally used rideshare services instead of taking public transportation. No trial or conviction has been reported in Reid's case; as of the available reporting, he had been arrested, charged, indicted on charges including second-degree murder, and held while the prosecution moved forward.
