In the early morning hours of a Sunday in the fall of 2014, a violent altercation erupted outside the Xtreme Lounge on Valentine Avenue in the Fordham section of the Bronx, leaving a scene of chaos and bloodshed. When the mayhem subsided, 24-year-old Dennis Rodriguez, a male resident of the Bronx, had been fatally shot. The incident, which occurred around 3:50 a.m. on October 5th, also left several other young men injured from gunshots, slashings, and a beating with a baseball bat.
Rodriguez was struck in the chest by a bullet and was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family described him as a loving and respectful young man who was not in any trouble, suggesting he may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The investigation into the deadly brawl led to the arrests of two teenagers, 19-year-old Zaire Bansey and 18-year-old Peter Hajdari. They faced a range of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, and manslaughter in connection with the death of Dennis Rodriguez and the injuries to the other victims. Another man, 21-year-old Armani Gonzalez, who was shot in the head during the same incident, succumbed to his injuries nearly three months later, elevating the case to a double homicide.
Following a three-week trial in June 2017, both Zaire Bansey and Peter Hajdari Jr. were acquitted of all charges related to the deaths of Dennis Rodriguez and Armani Gonzalez. The verdict came after a trial where the prosecution's case and the police investigation faced scrutiny. Questions were raised about the credibility of the key witness for the prosecution. After spending nearly three years at Rikers Island, the two young men were released. The acquittal left the families of the victims devastated and the question of who was responsible for the deaths unanswered.
