On what should have been a day of celebration, his fourteenth wedding anniversary, 35-year-old Obed Beltran-Sanchez, a father of two from Mexico, found his life cut tragically short. On the evening of February 12, 2024, he was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a violent dispute at the Mount Eden subway station in the Bronx. The rush-hour chaos erupted when two groups engaged in a verbal argument on a northbound 4 train, which quickly escalated to gunfire.
Beltran-Sanchez was struck in the chest and later died at a local hospital. The shootout also wounded five other people, ranging in age from 14 to 71.
The investigation that followed revealed the shooting was part of an ongoing gang dispute. Police identified several individuals involved in the incident. A 16-year-old alleged gang member, Michael Baker, was arrested and charged as an adult with murder, five counts of attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities also took a 14-year-old into custody who was believed to be involved in a prior shooting that may have instigated the subway gunfight. A search for at least one other shooter continued after the initial arrests.
In the pursuit of justice for Obed Beltran-Sanchez, the legal process moved forward for one of the identified assailants. Michael Baker, who was 14 at the time of a related, earlier shooting, pleaded guilty on October 20. He was subsequently sentenced to 12 years to life in prison for the murder of Beltran-Sanchez and the attempted murder of others injured in the fray. The court ordered his sentences for second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder to be served concurrently.
