In the early evening of April 16, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative calm at the intersection of East Mount Eden Avenue and Townsend Avenue in the Bronx. Miguel Doleo, a 29-year-old Hispanic man, was standing on a street corner with three other men when the attack occurred. Two scooters, each carrying two individuals, approached the group.
The passengers on the back of both scooters, who were wearing masks and hoodies, brandished firearms and opened fire, discharging approximately ten rounds.
Doleo was struck in the chest and leg by the gunfire. Emergency services rushed him to BronxCare Health System, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. The other three men with Doleo, aged 23, 31, and 37, all sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The four assailants fled the scene on their scooters, heading northbound on Townsend Avenue toward the Cross Bronx Expressway.
The New York City Police Department launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. Their efforts led to the apprehension of two suspects. On June 27, 2024, authorities arrested 21-year-old Yunior Calcano Baez. He faces a litany of charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, and four counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Several months later, on September 20, 2024, a second suspect, 27-year-old Robert Valdez-Pena, was taken into custody. He was charged with second-degree murder, four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, and four counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events of that tragic evening.
