In the early hours of a spring morning, the life of 27-year-old Miguel Rodriguez was tragically cut short in a Bronx park. On May 14, 2022, at approximately 2 a.m., Rodriguez was found with a fatal gunshot wound to his head inside Joyce Kilmer Park, not far from Yankee Stadium. First responders arrived to find him unconscious and unresponsive; he was rushed to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Family members described Miguel, a Hispanic male, as a hardworking man who held
down two jobs at local restaurants to support his mother and four brothers. They emphasized that he was the primary breadwinner for their family and was known as a peaceful person with no history of trouble with the law. His sudden and violent death left his loved ones devastated, creating a significant void in their lives.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a suspect eight months later. In January 2023, the New York Police Department arrested 40-year-old Leonard Thalease in connection with Miguel Rodriguez's death. According to police reports, the fatal encounter began with an altercation between the two men in a nearby store that spilled over into the park.
Thalease, a Bronx resident with a criminal record that reportedly dates back to 2000, was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. In addition to the charges related to Rodriguez's death, Thalease was also facing an assault charge for an unrelated incident involving his stepdaughter. The arrest brought a measure of relief to Rodriguez's grieving family, who expressed their hope that Thalease would receive a life sentence.
