In the East Tremont section of the Bronx, a dispute that began outside a Popeye's restaurant on a Friday afternoon tragically escalated, ending the life of 24-year-old Jeremiah Smith. On February 10, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., gunfire erupted near the intersection of East Tremont and Hughes Avenues, shattering the midday calm. Jeremiah was struck in the torso by the gunfire. He was rushed to St.
Barnabas Hospital, but the severe injuries he sustained proved to be fatal.
The violence of that day also claimed the life of Jeremiah's older brother, 37-year-old Devren Smith, who was also shot in the torso and succumbed to his injuries two days later. Two other men were also wounded in the quadruple shooting but were reported to be in stable condition and were expected to survive. The incident prompted a swift response from the New York Police Department, who quickly launched an investigation into the deadly altercation.
In the days that followed the shooting, authorities announced the arrests of two suspects in connection with the brothers' deaths. Fifty-one-year-old Salvatore Rivera and 32-year-old Jose Parilla were taken into custody. Both men were subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon for their alleged roles in the fatal shooting. The community was left to mourn the loss of the two brothers, with family and friends gathering for a vigil to remember Jeremiah and Devren.
