Jordany Aracena, a 17-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot on the evening of September 25, 2022, in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx. Around 6:15 p.m., near Beekman Avenue and East 141st Street, five individuals dressed in black and wearing ski masks opened fire, striking the teenager in the chest and arm. The assailants fled the scene, and Aracena was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An aspiring drill rapper, Aracena's music became a central focus of
the police investigation. Detectives believe he may have been targeted in retaliation for lyrics in his songs. It is suspected that in his music, he mentioned other drill rappers and the names of slain gang members, which may have made him a target. A police source indicated that Aracena was possibly lured to the location by a phone call before the fatal encounter. While investigators explored the connection to his music, Aracena's family believes the motive was robbery, not his lyrical content. His cousin described him as a happy person with many friends and disputed the theory that his music led to his death.
The investigation into the shooting led to an arrest. A 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody in connection with Aracena's death and is facing murder charges. Due to his age, the suspect's name was not publicly released. Law enforcement continues to search for the other four individuals involved in the shooting.
Friends and family remember Jordany as the youngest of four children who had been deeply affected by the death of his mother four years prior. His father expressed immense grief over the loss of his son. A friend and neighbor acknowledged that while Aracena was never violent, he may have exaggerated his persona in his rap lyrics, a common practice in the genre. This friend also noted that Aracena was a rising talent who had garnered interest from A&R representatives for a potential record deal.
