On the night of April 24, 2021, Jameik Bishop, an 18-year-old male, was ambushed on the stoop of his home in the Wakefield neighborhood of the Bronx. Around 11 p.m., as he sat outside his residence on East 225th Street near Bronxwood Avenue, a shooter opened fire, striking him multiple times in the face, chest, and right shoulder. Neighbors reported hearing the gunshots and Bishop's cries for his mother as he tried to get back inside his house.
Emergency services were called to the
scene, and the unconscious teen was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Jameik Bishop succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The incident was part of a significant increase in gun violence across New York City that year.
The investigation into the shooting suggested it may have been gang-related. Police sources indicated that Bishop had ties to a gang known as the 20/30 Group and had been arrested 16 times on various charges, including assault and robbery. While some neighbors described Bishop as a 'good boy' who was quiet and lived with his mother, the nature of the attack led authorities to explore his affiliations as a potential motive.
Following an investigation that involved witness statements and surveillance footage, the New York Police Department identified a suspect. On May 3, 2021, authorities arrested 19-year-old Omar Barnes in connection with the fatal shooting. Barnes was subsequently charged with murder. He was arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court and held without bail. The case against him is ongoing.
