In the early morning hours of a late August day, a trip back to a familiar neighborhood ended in tragedy for Tyrone Tabanah. The 34-year-old man was fatally shot in the Bronx, a place he knew well but that had become a source of worry for his loved ones. The incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. on August 29, 2020, in front of a building on Boston Road.
When police officers from the 42nd Precinct arrived at the scene, they found Tabanah with a gunshot wound to his leg.
A second man, who was 54 years old, had also been shot, suffering a graze wound to his ankle. Both men were quickly transported to Lincoln Hospital for medical attention. While the older man was listed in stable condition, Tabanah's injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
At the time of the shooting, details about the circumstances leading up to the violence were scarce. Law enforcement sources suggested that the shooting, along with another homicide that occurred nearby, may have stemmed from personal disputes rather than being related to gang activity. A woman who knew Tabanah mentioned that his family had previously lived in the area but had been forced to move. Despite the move, he was still a presence in the old neighborhood.
Detectives at the scene began an investigation into the shooting, exploring the possibility that it might be connected to another recent homicide in the same vicinity. However, in the immediate aftermath, no description of any suspects was released, and no arrests were announced in connection with the death of Tyrone Tabanah. The investigation into his death remains ongoing, leaving a family to mourn a son who, according to his mother, couldn't stay away from the neighborhood that ultimately claimed his life.
