In the early morning hours of a warm August Saturday in the Bronx, the life of 23-year-old Shane Sanchez was tragically cut short by gunfire. The fatal incident unfolded just before 2 a.m. outside of 2765 Sampson Avenue, within the NYCHA Throgs Neck Houses where Sanchez resided. Responding to a 911 call, police officers arrived to find Sanchez on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was emergently transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead.
Just prior to the deadly shooting, police had been called to the very same location to disperse a large fight, though it remains unclear if the two events were directly related. Sources within the police department indicated that an argument had preceded the shooting. In the hours that followed, the normally quiet walkway outside the apartment building was transformed into a crime scene, with evidence markers dotting the pavement as investigators worked to piece together the events that led to Sanchez's death. The gunman was reported to have fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
