Kaleb Tyrone Rollins, a 19-year-old male from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was shot and killed during the early morning hours of August 6, 2026, in what investigators have described as a firearm transaction that turned deadly. Tuscaloosa police responded at about 12:30 a.m. to the 5500 block of 20th Avenue East, also described as East 20th Avenue in southeastern Tuscaloosa near Jug Factory Road.
When officers arrived, they found Rollins lying dead in the roadway from a gunshot wound.
Investigators with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit determined that Rollins had approached a vehicle occupied by several juveniles for the purpose of purchasing a firearm. According to authorities, Rollins spoke with the occupants through a vehicle window and handed money inside as part of the proposed transaction. Investigators said the people inside the vehicle then allegedly attempted to drive away without giving Rollins the firearm he had agreed to purchase.
As the vehicle began moving, Rollins was reportedly dragged for several feet. During the encounter, one of the occupants allegedly fired a gun, striking and killing him. Authorities said Rollins was unarmed at the time of the shooting. The circumstances led investigators to treat the death as a homicide connected to the attempted gun sale and the alleged effort by the vehicle's occupants to take the money without completing the transaction.
The investigation continued for several days as detectives interviewed witnesses, reviewed surveillance footage from the surrounding area, executed multiple search warrants and searched for people believed to have been involved. Those investigative efforts eventually resulted in the arrests of two juvenile males who were both charged as adults with felony murder in connection with Rollins' death.
The names, photographs and other identifying information of the two defendants have not been publicly released. Authorities said Alabama law restricts law enforcement from releasing identifying information about juveniles even when they are being prosecuted as adults under the applicable circumstances. Both defendants were taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail and were being held without bond following their arrests.
Investigators have indicated that the case is not considered closed with those two arrests. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said additional people were involved in the events surrounding the shooting and that further suspects could face charges as the investigation develops. As of the latest publicly available reporting, no additional arrests, trial proceedings or convictions had been announced, and authorities had not publicly identified which of the two charged juveniles is accused of firing the fatal shot.
