On January 23, 1988, 63-year-old John Robert Kirk, a World War II veteran and employee of Plantation Pipe Line Company, was traveling home from work in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He stopped his red 1984 Chevrolet pickup truck near the West Blocton exit on Interstate 59 South. At this location, Luther Jerome Williams, along with two accomplices, encountered Kirk.
