In the early morning hours of a Sunday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a small gathering at a residence on 58th Street East took a tragic turn. Donavin Ryans, a 30-year-old male, was present at the party. The night's friendly atmosphere soured when another individual, 22-year-old Gredrick Agnew, was asked to leave the get-together. What happened next plunged the gathering into chaos and ended one life while altering others forever.
Agnew, after being told to leave, allegedly returned with a firearm. Instead of seeking reentry or continuing the argument, he stood outside and fired into the residence through an open door. The hail of bullets struck four people inside. Donavin Ryans suffered fatal injuries and did not survive the shooting. The other three victims sustained injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Agnew fled the scene, sparking a multi-county manhunt. Investigators from the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, working with the U.S. Marshall's Task Force, quickly identified Agnew as the suspect based on witness interviews and physical evidence from the scene. Later that same day, he was located in Marengo County and taken into custody. Agnew was charged with Capital Murder, a charge elevated by the allegation of shooting into an occupied dwelling. He was committed to the Tuscaloosa County Jail with no bond.
