In the late evening hours of August 26, 2020, a dispute simmering over a woman tragically boiled over, ending the life of 19-year-old D'Angelo Jackson in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Jackson was a passenger in an SUV, traveling along James I. Harrison Jr. Parkway near Greensboro Avenue, when another vehicle pulled alongside them.
From within the adjacent vehicle, shots were fired into the SUV, striking the young man.
Despite the immediate response of emergency services, Jackson succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into the shooting was swift, and the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit quickly identified a suspect.
The following day, authorities arrested 25-year-old Alajuwon Winters. Investigators believe he was the individual who fired the fatal shots. The motive for the shooting was determined to be an ongoing argument between Winters and Jackson concerning a female acquaintance. Due to the circumstances of the crime, with the shots being fired from one vehicle into another, the charges against Winters were elevated.
Alajuwon Winters was charged with capital murder, in addition to attempted murder and reckless endangerment. The capital murder charge stemmed from the fact that the alleged perpetrator was inside a vehicle when the deadly shots were fired and the victim was also inside a vehicle. Following his arrest, Winters was held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond, awaiting legal proceedings. Funeral services for D'Angelo Jackson were held on September 5, 2020.
